We subtract pre-tax 401(k) contributions and the standard deduction from your gross pay, apply the 2025 federal brackets, add Social Security (6.2% up to $176,100) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% over $200k single / $250k joint), then apply your state's income tax. What's left is yours.
Why does the state matter so much?
Nine states have no income tax at all; California's top bracket tops 12%. On a $100k salary the gap between the cheapest and priciest states in our table can be thousands per year — the comparison table shows it on your exact numbers.
